SageCRM - Exchange Integration vs. Outlook Integration

Did you know that SageCRM allows two types of integration for Outlook calendar syncing as a standard feature?

Exchange integration and Outlook integration are two separate features in Sage CRM.  Exchange integration is an add-on feature that can be requested by a Sage CRM customer, while Outlook integration is a standard Sage CRM feature.

Exchange integration uses a server-to-server architecture to synchronize appointments. Exchange integration is transparent to the user, and operates continuously. Outlook integration uses a client-to-server architecture to synchronize appointments and tasks, and requires a plugin on the client side. Outlook integration is operated either on a manual or a timed basis.

The advantages of Exchange integration include:

  • Continuous operation, therefore the user does not have to be logged in for
    synchronization to take place.
  • No additional setup required by the user.
  • It can be enabled for individual users.

If you have both Exchange integration and Outlook integration installed at the
same time, Exchange will synchronize the appointments and Outlook will
synchronize only tasks and contacts.

How does this get integrated, with a custom script, or ?  I just discovered this blog, and you have 3 of my top "wish list" items listed as things that can be done.

There is a .pdf called Exchange Syncronization Guide included in the SageCRM documentation folder that describes the procedures for setting this up.  You will also need the CDO.dll file. "CDO (Collaborative Data Object) needs to be present on the CRM server so that CRM can communicate with Exchange. It is important that you make sure the latest version of the CDO DLL exists on the CRM server."

Thanks!  I almost have everything done with the install, however I'm getting error 1903 when I try to create an appointment for a user in CRM when saving it.  It puts the appt on the calendar, however it's not syncing with the users outlook.  I am going back through the install to double check.  My scripts ran ok, although on Exchange I get 'oBoundFolder.Bindings' is null or not an object.

My understanding is that Sage no longer supports the exchange script on CRM 6.1 and 6.2.

Also the script is only good for Exchange 5.5

with the exchange server synchronisation can you do away with the outlook plug-in entirely?

Exchange Server integration does not work with Exchange 2007 ... not supported. So you need to run an old version (2003) to get it working.  Also the Outlook plugin plays up a lot and works not really 100% ...

Hello, Scott.

I thought you might be interested in learning about this new product: Riva Integration Server for Exchange and SageCRM.

Riva provides server-side CRM integration between SageCRM and Exchange. Because Riva does server-to-server synchronisation, there are no plug-ins to install on any of the Exchange clients. That means that all Exchange clients have full, transparent server-side integration for SageCRM contacts, appointments, tasks, opportunities, quotes, cases, email archiving, etc.

Riva is compatible with on-premise and hosted Exchange 2010, 2007 and 2003. It is compatible with hosted and on-premise installations of SageCRM - with full support for all Exchange clients (Outlook, Outlook Web Access, Macintosh Entourage, BlackBerry, ActiveSync and IMAP).

I look forward to having you check out Riva and answering any questions you might have about Riva Integration Server for Exchange and SageCRM.

Good stuff, I will be contacting you.  I am not crazy about having to revert to Outlook 2003 just to get it working, and from my understanding Sage CRM will only sync appointments to Outlook.

Finally got exchange sync working.  I find it crazy that Sage still doesn't support Outlook 2007 for synchronization..supposedly in CRM 7.

This article on the SageCRM site implies it is still supported. I am waiting for clarification from the article author.

Hi there,

We are a Sage Development partner and provide an alternative Outlook integration module as part of our 'Accelerator for Sage CRM' product. It does not require MS Exchange and works on 2007/2010. For details see our site and/or contact us for a demo.
