OMG! SalesLogix 7.5 Web is Blazing Fast

I Mean Seriously Fast

After evaluating several on-line business apps, I was frustrated with slow response times, refresh rates, etc.  Made me wonder how SalesLogix SP1 Web compared.  So I thought I’d do a Little unscientific testing to find out.  We recently set up a temporary SalesLogix Web system at a VERY low end, low cost commodity hosting provider for testing our SalesLogix add-on modules, so I figured I’d use that for my little test.

Before I go further, I need to give a shout out to Mark Duthoy, Senior Engineer at CFX, for getting this set up correctly with our VERY low end hosting provider (remember, this is a temp install for internal testing porpoises only).  Mark has been with us for 13 years, and it is awesome having him on our team.  Mark blogs here.

For readers who have yet to see SalesLogix in action, the general design consists of a Nav Bar running down the left side of the app, and tabs running horizontally across the record your looking at, such as account, Contact, Opportunity, etc.  Here’s a screenshot:

The Test

My Notebook and Other Details

I have a Vostro 1710 Dell notebook.  It’s a consumer grade machine with a base price of $599 with the main performance related upgrade being 4GB RAM from 2GB.  Yeah, I get the short end compared to the rest of our team when it comes to hardware.  Can’t remember spending less than $4,000 on a machine for anyone else.  My browser is IE 7 which is not nearly as fast as Firefox, but it is officially supported by Sage – most of our geeks use Firefox.

The hosting service is the cheapest we could find that included the cheapest version of MS SQL. My ISP at home (where the test was done) is Comcast, whatever their cheapest package is.

First Login

The very first time I logged into this instance of SalesLogix 7.5 SP1 Web I recorded the following results:

  • Login took about 33 seconds

  • Moving between Nav bar items (Main Entities) took 2 to 5 seconds

  • Moving between Tabs on a Main Entity took .5 to 1 second

Can’t comment on the first time Login, because I can only login for the first time once.  Maybe Ryan can comment. The other times were better than most everything I’ve tested.

Second and Subsequent Logins Were Crazy Fast

After the first Login, I rebooted my computer to make sure there were not any controls or whatever stored in memory that would enhance performance.  The goal being to remove as many variables as possible.

The second and every other time I logged on, the performance was stunning.  Kudo’s to Stu Carnie and the whole dev team in Scottsdale.

  • Login took an average of 1 to 1.5 seconds

  • Moving between Nav bar items (Main Entities) took .25 to .75 seconds

  • Moving between Tabs on a Main Entity was INSTANTANEOUS

This is insane performance folks.  I don’t care what we’re comparing it to.

Conclusions, Sort Of

For the real geeks reading, this test is full of holes for sure.  But from a relative standpoint, I think it is informative.  I’ve tested countless business apps, both hosted and on premise in my 20+ years in the CRM business and have yet to experience this sort of performance.  That goes for both web AND Windows apps, hosted or on premise (installed onsite).

Obviously, many factors impact performance.  Hardware, internal and external connectivity, transaction volume and many more factors need to be tested to assure a business app will scale to your environment. The rich functionality combined with cutting edge design and architecture of SalesLogix make it a high performance, cost effective contender for your CRM solution.

Did I mention what a great job Mark did getting this set up?

  1. Your initial delay was likely due to IIS & the ASP.NET runtimes starting up and setting up the initial cache of the site. On a real production app, there would likely be enough hitting it throughout the day that you’d not see that same slow login time (for initial login).

Something that is cool about this:

    1) This is *hosted* SalesLogix. Woot! Not to mention hosted on a pretty cheap hosting provider.

    2) After your inital login, the speeds were just INCREDIBLE. Let’s see the LAN client get even close to those speeds. It’s not going to happen.

The fact is, if someone has SLX web and complaining that it is slow. The problem isn’t SLX web, but instead the slowness is caused by likely 3 things:

    1) Lack of hardware
    2) Lack of bandwidth
    3) Using the wrong browser (IE *will* be a slower experience for sure, especially when it comes to SLX web).
